After a run of comic book adaptations and sci-fi
mind-benders, Christopher Nolan has sets his sights on the Second World
War with Dunkirk. An extended promo will run ahead of Star Wars: Rogue One, but Nolan fans can watch a two-minute trailer now on YouTube.
The film will tell the story of Operation Dynamo, the
effort to rescue 300,000 Allied soldiers from the French port of Dunkirk
after German forces invaded the country. The rescue effort was
undertaken by the British Navy, as well as hundreds of small fishing and
pleasure boats pressed into service between May 26th and June 4th,
1940.
The trailer opens with British soldiers getting leaflets
dropped by German planes, urging them to surrender before cutting to the
soldiers being bombarded on the beaches of the port. The film appears
to be more straightforward than Nolan’s recent work, that has relied
heavily on twists and heady concepts. This looks like a more grounded
story, though not without Nolan’s eye for spectacular visuals.
